Hurricane Preparedness Part 2 Friday, Aug 29 2008

Several people have asked about boarding their windows.  This brought me to think about something I left off the preparedness list: tarps.  Look for plastic tarps (often blue) when getting your supplies.  They can be used to block a busted window or cover a damaged roof.  If a storm hits, they will be scarce after the storm.  Plus they can be used during the storm if a window, etc. is damaged.  Your insurance company will expect you to limit your damage by making these types of temporary repairs and precautions against additional damage.  If possible, take pictures of any damage before temporary repairs, so that the insurance company will have evidence of the actual damage.

Hurricane Preparedness Wednesday, Aug 27 2008

Okay, so this is the not so fun part of the fun blog.  Living on the Gulf Coast occasionally we have to deal with the unpleasantness of tropical systems.  I’m going to give you some basics and some links to more information.  First, be prepared, we hear that all the time but with stores ransacked when the final word of a storms approach it makes since to keep the essentials on hand from the early part of the season.

Water is probably most important supply, be sure and have 1 gallon per person per day, for at least 3 days.  You’ll need no perishable food (remember a b-b-q grill may be your only way of heating things up).  If you take any medications, make sure you have several days supply.  Flashlights and BATTERIES are also high on your list.  Plan to get cash out of the bank, ATMs and credit card systems will likely be down.  Fill your car up with gas and if you have a gas can, fill it up too.

Many people decide to evacuate.  If you plan to evacuate, make the decision early.  Determine a place out of the path of the storm.  Remember tornadoes and such are often worse in outlying areas from where the storm passes.  Realize that traffic evacuating will probably be heavy and you need to be patient.  In Mobile, if an evacuation is in order interstate 65 runs north only.  If you have pets, make sure they will be welcome at your final destination.  You should also have a return plan.  It may be difficult to return to the area you evacuated from.  Airports may be closed and roads and bridges may be blocked or damaged.

The University provides weather information and notices about whether the University is open.  I recommend that everyone read the hurricane preparedness information from the HHS.

Some good links for weather information are Weather Underground and for more models than you can normally find South Florida Water District.

BAYFEST!!! Friday, Aug 22 2008

Anyone who knows me knows how much it excited me to see Kid Rock on the front page of the Press Register this morning! (Connie called me with the good news at 6:40 am. I hear Carol was awakened before 6 am with the news from her loving husband.) He will be performing on Saturday, October 4th in Mobile at Bayfest! As this will be My 4th time to see him in 2008, I can assure you he is a superb performer. Several faculty, residents and staff plan to be there. The only downside is that Kid will not be finished performing before Buckcherry goes on stage the same night at 10:45. Other acts announced for Bayfest include: Eric Church, Blake Shelton, Rodney Atkins, MAZE, The Stylistics, The Whispers, The O’Jays, Saving Abel, Puddle of Mudd, and Avenged Sevenfold. Considering that the titles of several songs performed by a couple of these artist had to be edited to be on radio and knowing Kid Rock music, how the Bayfest organizers expect to keep their family friendly rules is anybody’s guess. I’ll post the other entertainers as they are announced early September.

Also coming up musically around the area, at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Biloxi, Chaka Khan, August 29th and Gretchen Wilson, September 19th (yes, I’ve seen Gretchen 3 times and she’s wonderful too).

Please let me know if you can think of anything you would like discussed or added here. Bottoms up for anyone attending the International Beer Festival tomorrow. Don’t get too wet.
